Cultural Phenomenon

They call it Tecktoniks; it is a form of dance based on a blend of hip hop and techno styles. They say the starting point for this scene was a complex of nightclubs on the southeastern outskirts of Paris called the Metropolis and also because of videos on file-sharing websites YouTube and Dailymotion it is spreading even further. As you can see on the video Tecktonik is a mix of break-dancing, hip hop and techno, featuring flailing arms and quick foot movements.

Is this the makings of another culture movement or will it just fade in the annuals of time? Fellow okayplayer beautifulboogieman had this to say, "its been done like mad by young kids here in geneva...they bring out their boomboxes and wile out in the park. these are 16-18 year olds...its cool to see cause its kinda how hip hop started lol..."

Hip-hop did start out in the parks with DJs cutting into the power lines at basketball courts to plug up their equipment and play outside for the people and according to the U.S. Department of State, hip hop is "now the center of a mega music and fashion industry around the world," that crosses social barriers and cuts across racial lines.

Anne Petiau, a sociologist specializing in the study of electronic and pop music, says the Tecktoniks scene is a mix of young people from different backgrounds. "Techtonik has also reached the middle classes and beyond. There's a real mix," she says.

Drugs and High Prices

Pulled this off the Economist:

"The costliest place in the world to get high is Japan, according to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime's annual World Drug Report. The street price of a gram of cannabis weed was $58.30 in 2005, over twice as much as in the next most expensive nation, Australia. Americans pay nearly twice as much as Canadians. Similar disparities occur in Europe. Although the Netherlands is the only Western country where cannabis can be bought legally, punters pay more there than in Germany or France. Prices are cheapest in developing countries, where enforcement is less strict."

Drugs Bitch

The drug market is a very crazy place, much like the stock market I suppose. You have to deal with the middle-men, inflation, price gouging, supply-and-demand, and a whole host of other free market theories to worry about. It's strange how I can take a pound of weed that cost $200 down south and bring it up north and sell it for $1500, that's damn near an 800% increase in profit!!! If marijuana was legalized in the United States a lot of the price inflation would be eliminated and a clear price could be set across the boards. But premium strains such as, Acapulco Gold, Panama Red, White Widow, Sour Diesal, etc... would still command a more expensive price tag as some are more rarer or more potent than others.

Marijuana Kills, really it does...

and listen to the dog.
